What Is Myofunctional Therapy & Why Do We Need It?
Myofunctional Therapy is an exercise-based therapy. Think of it as physical therapy, only for the mouth, tongue, and face muscles. Our exercises at MyoSpir are designed specifically to train proper breathing, speaking, chewing, and swallowing.
The goal of therapy is to correct the dysfunction that has occurred by compensating for these dysfunctions over time. The four goals that we want to accomplish at the end of treatment are:
-
Nasal breathing day and night
-
Lips closed together all day and night
-
Restore proper chewing and swallowing patterns
-
Tongue to the roof of the mouth day and night
Therapy is designed to work in partnership with other professionals such as dentists, doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, nurses, and psychologists.
Orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD) is any dysfunction of the oral and facial muscles that impair proper growth, development, and/or function. OMD can exhibit a wide variety of symptoms.
Myofunctional therapy has been able to help improve many OMD Treatments in patients, such as:
